Coligny, Gaspard de
(1519–72)
   Politician.
   Coligny was a member of the powerful Châtillon family and he spent his life in public service, ultimately becoming Admiral of France. During the late 1550s he was converted to Protestantism and, during the French Wars of Religion, he was regarded as the leading member of the Huguenot party. He was a favourite of the young King Charles, and catherine de’ medici became jealous of his influence. She ordered his murder, which prompted the massacre of St Bartholomew’s Day during the course of which several thousand Protestants were slaughtered.
